Deconstructing A Hero's Journey

              Deconstructing A Hero’s Journey

(No, not that 2006 piece of cinema garbage adaptation...)
I utilized the following for reference, (in other words here is my guidelines on how i structured my deconstruction: http://scottjeffrey.com/2011/02/deconstructing-the-hero%E2%80%99s-journey/
Thanks "Scott Jeffery" :)

  • Living in the "Ordinary World": Eragon, the eponymous protagonist of Christopher Paolini's seminal fantasy epic, is like all heroes dwelling in his comfortable, rural, agriculture based village of Caravhall, fulfilling a monotonous labor laden existence until...
  •  What came first, the Adventure or the...Egg?: Finding a mysterious egg, bonded physically by a searing, sapphire, scar, Eragon is thrust, called forth by adventure as the world's last remaining "Dragon Rider" (well technically not the last...) alongside his newly hatched dragon: Saphira.
  •  And thus came the fires: Being pursued by the Lugubrious, maniacal Empire, King Galbatrix's minions the "Ra'Zac's" force Eragon to leave his hometown and family behind, inevitably encountering a plethora of obstacles/adventure along the way.
  • Cue the obstacles: Hiding from the evil magic of the Empire's Shade Dur'za  whilst learning how to use the capabilities in said new but seemingly innately latent abilities, Eragon fights off not only the trailing Empire but his own internal lack of self-confidence, but hes not alone in his strife...
  • It's easier with friends: Garrow, previously a Dragon Rider in his own past acts as the tutor/father figure to Eragon's endeavors, teaching him mastery of his magic as well as invaluable life lessons. Even Eragon's Dragon, Saphira helps Eragon solve some of his own internal complexes throughout the course of his ventures. But...
  • Life, and death happens: Eragon witnesses the death of his mentor, Garrow at the hands of the Empire, learning that in order to truly know the value of life you must witness it being taken away...speaking of taken away...
  • Entering the Dragon's lair: And I mean "Dragon's lair" literally, Eragon is captured by the Empire, imprisoned and bereft of Saphira/any friends, facing his fears of isolation, of self, that is...
  • Rebirth of a Champion:  Byway of an old friend (Murtagh) as well as new (Arya) Eragon escapes and travels to the City of Dwarves where he wages a concentrated battle between Dur'zac, managing to conquer his internal limitations but at a price...
  • Finding the holy grail: Though Eragon succeeded ultimately in defeating Dur'zac, achieving a temporary peace for the dwarves as well as his homely countryside, the shade was merely the beginning of his quest. Eragon may have succeeded in the small battles of his own internalized challenges, but he has just begun his journey, fraught with revelations, trials by fire as well as character-dynamic evolution, Eragon has just begun his journey as so many other figures have, his journey as a hero. (NOTE: The reason for no "proper conclusion" to Eragon's hero tale, following the "return home to peace" formula, is because there are sequels....)
